I just finished my inspirational diet for 11am. Sooj had a couple of awesome links and some mind fodder. That's not unusual... she's like that.

Which brings me to contemplating the authentic me. Sitting here with 2 dogs and a cat, the other humans are gone. The other cats are in the other home. I'm supposed to be somewhere else right now. A few somewhere else's but that requires me to be 135% me and there's not enough me left for that ...

So, I guess I'll just be the me I am.. Funny thing, my ME - it's enough for everyone else... I just need to catch up.

Oh and... if you've got a couple of bucks and a home to live in, you might want to look at this: http://alankria.livejournal.com/149688.html?view=1209784#t1209784

Sanctuary?

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 2:15 PM
Until about a week ago, when I noticed a related feed on Twitter, I had never heard of the SF show called Sanctuary. I looked it up on IMDB and it seemed sort of interesting. Today I noticed that the first season DVDs exist. I'm curious whether anyone reading this is a fan of the show or has thoughts on what kind of viewer it's designed for. (Similarities to other shows...?)

Looking for German translation help.

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 10:15 AM
The release of Winterfluch is coming up (January 2010). This is the German-language edition of Rosemary and Rue. In other news, yay!

I'd like to make a blog post to welcome folks around the release date, and while I realize most German readers also read English, it seems like it would be polite to make the post in German. Is there somebody who's willing to help me with translating a moderately-long blog post from English into German? I'm asking now so there's time to get it right before I'd need to post.

Thanks, guys.

A's surgery went very well. We're now dealing with the recovery period. So far that is going okay.

A few notes about the Fannish Advent.

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 8:43 AM
Since I only do this one a year, and people always have the same questions, here are a few notes on the Fannish Advent process. Because I care! Also because I'd rather not confuse people if I can avoid it.

Yes, you can suggest the same thing day after day without becoming annoying. I do one fandom a day; I don't repeat fandoms within the same year unless something really odd happens. This means that if you only suggest something once, and it's not the fandom I choose for the next day, it's not going to get used. I don't go back to previous days unless there's a day with no suggestions at all (which has actually never happened). Please feel free to comment every day with the fandom or fandoms you're hoping for.

No, this is not a democracy. Seconding or thirding a fandom does not make it more likely to be my selection for the next day. I write the daily advents based on a combination of "what I feel like writing right now" and "how interested I am by working in that universe." So twenty people saying "oh, yes, this" for something is actually not going to make it any more or less likely to be written.

I will not write fanfic for any literary work whose originator is on Livejournal and could potentially see this journal. That means no Tanya Huff, no Jim Hines, no Cat Valente, etc. I won't write them no matter how many times they're suggested, because that isn't even remotely fair to the original authors, who don't need to be put in the position of telling me to take something down.

I can't provide a full list of fandoms I will write, since there are so many and some of them are so obscure, but here are some fandoms I won't write, either because I'm not familiar with the source material or because I have nothing to say:

Babylon 5
Dollhouse
Farscape
Flash Forward
How I Met Your Mother
Lost
Mad Men
NCIS: Los Angeles
Sanctuary
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Stargate
Star Trek: DS9
Star Wars
Twilight
V (new series)

Hope this helps.

Code Of Everand is a free browser-based MMORPG aimed at pre-teens. I worked on this project earlier in the year, developing the setting, naming streets and critters, and writing quests. It was created for the UK Department of Transport as essentially an interactive public service announcement. The game’s missions and mythology tacitly encourage players to be safety-conscious while crossing the street. If you’re in the UK and know a kid in the target age range, check it out and pass along a recommendation.

what a crabby nightmare

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 7:53 AM

I had the strangest nightmare, I can't explain why my brain chose to give me that. Not "why a nightmare" but "why crabs"?

I had a box with crabs in the kitchen, and really big ones. When I didn't look one of them had escaped and while I was looking for tongs to pick it up and put it back the others escaped, too - a zombie like slow-mo army of crabby crabs. I couldn't find the meat hammer so I pounded on them with a ladle but while I got rid of two of them in front of me others started pincing my feet from behind. And Paulinchen had somehow gotten barricaded in inside a kitchen cupboard and I had to get to her and rescue her - Brötchen just watched and didn't care. Very lifelike scenario.

I find crabs and lobsters and the like rather disgusting (alive) because they're just posh water spiders. But I haven't seen any in some time, there were non in any animal documentary or food porn I might have seen recently.

ZOMBIE CRABS - WHY?

Tonight we ordered Thai food. Thai food isn't available in large quantities in rural Devon, so it was exotic. I aim to please. They liked the country-style Phad Tai and the prawns with yellow curry.

I also took my Mother in-law to the grocery store. She and I share this love of going to grocery stores in other countries, so this was a good time. I took her to what amounts to a local chain that is like Target. Only more fun. (and probably cheaper) The size of the place blew her away and she said she could have spent hours just wandering around looking at things. This may make some giggle, but what intrigued/surprised her the most was seeing clam juice for sale. "What do you do with that?" "drink it. Usually with booze."
My father in-law spent hours perusing the wine section and the beer aisle. He bought a lot. I mean. A LOT. I am not exactly sure how he expects all of us to drink everything while he visits. He is enjoying all of the local offerings, so that is nice. When anyone visits here I have always liked to introduce them to all of the fantastic local food/beverage that is available. I am deeply proud of what is produced in my region. There are some genuinely original and talented producers of all kinds of food and I feel lucky to be able to offer it to friends/family. You visit me and I will make you leave full.
It's a promise.

I took care of some Christmas shopping today. Slowly but surely I will get through my lists as I want to spend most of December cooking and eating. That is what Christmas is really about for me. Good eating and spending time with assorted relations and friends.

Meanwhile, Back Around the House...

Apparently, Katie and Julie are being too much for some of the people we know to handle. While we're working on improving their behavior, overall we tend to think it's pretty normal for two bright, active children, one of whom just turned three; the other of whom is only 18 19 months old (as of today).

[info]daisy_knotwise is pretty much fit to spit nails. I sympathize entirely.

They're young. We're trying to teach them how to behave, but it's a work in progress.

If you'd rather we weren't around with the girls, that's fine. Let us know. We'll be somewhere else instead.
